During the past three centuries, British missionaries have played a prominent role in the global spread of the Christian faith. Figures such as William Carey in India, David Livingstone and Mary Slessor in Africa, and Hudson Taylor, Eric Liddell, and Gladys Aylward in China are among the best known of those who sacrificially carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to distant lands. Yet this history prompts an important and often overlooked question: who first brought Christianity to Britain itself? Was it, perhaps, the Romans, who governed much of Britain in the centuries following the time of Jesus?
